Helen Brown holds a special place in her heart for Cancer Center of Santa Barbara. She has volunteered in our waiting room every week for over 12 years, helping new and continuing patients feel right at home. Helen learned of the family like atmosphere at the Center when her husband John was treated for Lung Cancer back in 1998. Helen sensed there were friendships to be had with physicians and staff and enjoyed the evolving nature of them over the course of John's treatment.
A resident of Goleta since 1954, Helen raised two sons, enjoyed her bowling league in the days of the Orchid Bowling Alley, and is member of Goleta Presbyterian Church. She told the Center that when a dear friend she was taking care of passed away it was left to her to unravel the estate. Through this process, Helen learned just how many assets were taxable, even things like an IRA. With her own financial security needs met through Social Security and a rental property in Goleta, Helen elected to reduce her own estate tax by pledging her IRA to the Center in her estate. Helen's generosity along with her vote of confidence in our personalized care will continue to impact the lives of many who come after her for treatment. Thank you, Helen, and we hope that many more special friendships will be born in the waiting room of Cancer Center of Santa Barbara.
